About the role

The Principal Design Engineer will manage and lead projects, ensuring they meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria. They will lead aspects of infrastructure design and work as a lead designer on a range of projects.

Responsibilities

  • Day to day management of a design team.
  • Undertake checking of design deliverables.
  • The review and cascading of current industry standards.
  • The Safety, Health and Environmental awareness of all design staff.
  • The quality of ALL design submissions.
  • Discharge the responsibilities of the Designer under the 2015 CDM regulations including the principles of prevention.
  • Where required act as Principal Designer under CDM 2015, leading and coordinating the pre-construction phase to ensure risks are identified, mitigated and managed, and that all duty holders fulfill their statutory health and safety responsibilities.
  • The promotion and enforcement of company procedures to design staff.
  • The review of method statements/risk assessments
  • The development and implementation of new industry software where applicable.
  • Ensure design deliverables are met and to report on performance to the Head of design or their associates.
  • Promote safe by design principles, consider sustainability and low carbon options.
  • Responsible and to lead detailed civil and structural design and calculations in accordance with the relevant standards and procedures, under the direction of the head of design or their associates.
  • May assume the role of Lead Design Engineer (Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer for LCDAE for NG) on large or complex projects as well as smaller projects as required.
  • May assume the role of Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) for NG Projects.
  • Aid the Design Manager with appointing and providing training where necessary and manage design staff in an efficient manner.
  • Business development with DNOs and TSOs, including prospecting, tendering and delivering design services.
  • Aid with the production of design tools and review of internal procedures.
  • Excellent level of understanding of relevant British Standards and Eurocodes with regard to civil and structural, design and specification.
  • Work closely with other members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians from other disciplines, including external consultants where necessary.
  • Coordinate with site construction teams, principal designers (2015 CDM) and temporary works coordinators and support constructability reviews.
  • Support tender and tender preparation for projects of all varying sizes including fee estimates.
  • Provide support to CAD staff and trainees in their professional development.
  • Ensure thorough checking and accuracy of deliverables.
  • Manage and keep records in accordance with company QA procedures.
  • Have responsibility for maintaining calculation and drawing records.
  • Participate in lessons Learnt and knowledge share workshops and share across the organisation and design team.
  • Attend in-house design courses and seminars and feedback to the rest of the department if required.
  • Keep up to date with ICE/ IET CPD requirements.
  • Report to management team as required.
  • Excellent team ethic, and ability to work extended hours on occasions when required.
  • Represent Omexom – Design in external project technical meetings if required.
  • Represent Omexom – Design in external events and site visits if required.
  • Develop positive relationships with customers through good professional conduct.
  • Review specialist subcontractors/suppliers production calculations and drawings for technical compliance with design intent.
  • Ability to work accurately and methodically under pressure and strict deadlines, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks.
  • Excellent time and cost management skills to ensure cost effective and accurate delivery.
  • Effectively manage own time, and others within small teams across multiple projects and prioritize workload.
  • Good communication style and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work accurately and methodically under pressure and to strict deadlines, including the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work well within a team of other professionals in delivering designs to satisfy the agreed brief. (e.g: Civil Engineers, OHL, Kelvin Power, Temp works designers)

  • Complete Codex timesheets accurately and in good time, ensure your team are also completing the timesheets accurately.

  • Achieve a firm level 3 competency and have met several attributes at level of 4 the TOHL Competency Matrix “Expert level of skill and understanding. Is able and willing to take initiative and develop new processes and efficiencies. Can check work.”

Person Specification

  • Qualifications and experience: Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a holder of degrees suitable to be either an Engineering Council (EngC) Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng) or Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) with one of the relevant Professional Engineering Institutions (PEI’s) such as Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Engineering and Technology, Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Must have a detailed understanding of the latest OHL design practices, standards and analysis software systems. Preferable BSc/BEng in Structural or Civil Engineering with 7-10 years design and construction industry experience. Full Uk Driving Licence. Principal Designer experience.
  • Competencies: Working knowledge and experience of the 2015 CDM Regulations including Principal Designer requirements and namely Regulations 8 and 9. Discharge the responsibilities of Designer under the 2015 CDM Regulations, and ensure a comprehensive Designers Risk Assessment undertaken for all Projects. Promote and enforcement of company procedures to Design staff. Knowledge of current UK technical standards and legislation requirements. Knowledge and understanding of typical construction materials used in the UK such as timber, concrete, reinforced concrete and its limitations. An eye for detail when undertaking specific tasks, and the effect of their use/implementation to the wider project. High level of proficiency of Microsoft office software. To engage and use various design software programs such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, Revit. To have an excellent level of understanding. A good working understanding of document control processes and be familiar with ISO 19650 for BIM. High Level proficiency in the use of AutoCad 2D and 3D. A good knowledge in the production and review of technical specifications. Proven track record of project delivery and client satisfaction. Experienced and competent in leading varying sizes of project teams. Full understanding and delivery of assurance/sign off requirements. Technically competent in all aspects of Infrastructure design and co-ordination. Ability to produce CDM as-builts and input and produce the health and safety file, where appropriate. Support design delivery manager and from time to time undertake this role as required. Good communication skills. Awareness of own limits and ability to embrace change. Flexible and open minded. Ability to manage and accurately control and record change with the ability to coordinate and design change control and notify with early warnings. Report on cost of poor quality, through NCR’s and change records. Reliable team leader that strives for continual improvement. A high level of attention to detail. Undertake Design Project peer reviews. Provide technical support to the construction team.
