Principal Component Engineer

Mercury Systems has a great opportunity for an electrical engineer who specializes in Component Engineering to make an impact by maturing our component process and framework. We are seeking an experienced Components Engineer, Parts Engineer, or Reliability Engineer to support our warfare products and related technologies. This role supports a range of programs spanning terrestrial and space solutions, including aerospace systems that protect warfighters, noncombatants, and critical infrastructure. This is a hands-on, collaborative position where your input is valued. The role is hybrid and can be based in Huntsville, AL; Chantilly, VA; Cypress, CA; or Andover, MA.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a lead EEEE parts or materials and processes engineer on multiple space and terrestrial application programs.
• Lead component reviews, analysis, and assessment against program compliance requirements for space and military programs.
• Collaborate closely with customers, government agencies, and cross-functional teams to resolve supply chain issues, improve and document PMP activities, and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.
• Understand program requirements and Statements of Work (SOWs) to determine component environmental and characteristic application requirements.
• Provide technology insertion and parts selection/standardization guidance while adhering to business, component parametric, application environmental, and circuit application constraints.
• Generate and revise component drawings and associated verification data packages.
• Review electronic component and assembly reliability and construction data, and prepare data for Part and Material Review Board (MRB) review and adjudication.
• Perform alternate part investigations and generate comparison matrices showing differences and similarities of parts.
• Interface with internal stakeholders and external suppliers/manufacturers to develop component risk and verification delineation.
• Facilitate component selection and libraries application through coordination and generation of the program Bill of Material (BOM) in a collaboration toolset.
• Present component standardization, design library, obsolescence management, and termination finish risk results in support of design reviews for a program.
• Develop EEE parts specifications detailing component screening and qualification test plans and execute part qualifications with test houses.
• Create and submit NSPARs for customer review and approval supporting component screening and qualification plans. Present non-standard parts and materials to customers, defending their use.
• Skillfully present detailed technical information to internal and external customers with confidence.
• Participate in root cause corrective actions (RCCAs) and corrective action report (CAR/SCAR) activities as needed.
• Support periodic audits of suppliers’ facilities and processes.
• Mentor junior engineers and actively contribute to a knowledge-sharing culture.
• Develop and maintain appropriate reports, databases, and PMP meeting agendas and minutes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).
• Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in a related industry (e.g., defense, electronics) or 5 years plus a master’s degree in a related discipline.
• Prior experience as a lead component engineer (or similar) on defense/aerospace/space programs.
• Knowledge of common military and industry specifications and standards (MIL, ASTM, AEC, ESA, NASA, etc.).
• Knowledge of electronic fabrication techniques and processes such as SMT, chip and wire, hybrids, etc.
• Experience with the design and manufacture of electronic circuit card assemblies.
• Experience with the NSMAR NSPAR process and/or forms.
• Familiarity with environmental testing per MIL-STD-883 (required); MIL-PRF-38534, 38535, passive components, etc.
• Clear oral and written communication skills and a positive attitude.
• Ability to work remotely as part of a larger team.
• Active US DoD Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain one. US Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active US Security Clearance – Secret.
• Master’s degree in electrical engineering or other related science or engineering discipline.
• Understanding of failure modes in passives and packaged active devices.
• Prior experience in a Design Engineering role, especially on space-based programs.
• Experience collaborating with and managing suppliers, and requesting PPAPs, qualification reports, and additional documentation.
• Experience designing complex embedded digital hardware products from concept to completion.
• Experience designing complex circuits with microprocessors, FPGAs, or network switches.
• Prior experience in Quality or Supplier Quality organizations; familiarity with SAE AS9100 and AS9102. Knowledge of QMS requirements.
• Proficiency in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), MES (Manufacturing Execution System), or Quality Management System.

Pay

• $87,100.00 - $182,900.00 annual salary for in-office or hybrid employees in FL, GA, IN, AZ, AL, MD, or TX, and all remote employees.
• $97,600.00 - $204,800.00 annual salary for in-office or hybrid employees in VA, CA, NH, or MA.
• $102,800.00 - $215,800.00 annual salary for in-office or hybrid employees in NJ.
