PRIMARY REGISTERED NURSE

About the Role

The primary Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the overall care of patients and families, directing the activities of other nursing personnel, and collaborating with interdisciplinary team members.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical and supporting case management based on patient’s diagnosis and end-of-life symptoms.
• Complete initial, comprehensive, and updated assessments of patient and family needs.
• Develop, implement, and review care plans for patients and families; update as needs change.
• Prepare for and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings as scheduled.
• Communicate with all interdisciplinary team members and report significant changes to the attending physician; process physician/NP orders.
• Teach family members patient care skills, including pain control, medication management, dressings, hygiene, and nutrition.
• Administer and titrate medication according to physician/nurse practitioner orders.
• Delegate nursing duties to LPNs and supervise care provided by CNAs.
• Prioritize daily work and adjust based on patient needs and staffing levels.
• Complete new patient admissions as needed.
• Maintain competency in required areas (primary and admissions roles).
• Comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and Unity’s policies and procedures.
• Satisfy mandatory training requirements regarding regulations and policies.
• Document activity consistently and concisely according to department protocols.
• Promote and maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned and maintain regular attendance.
• Share in providing 24-hour, seven-day-a-week coverage.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Ability to operate computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
• Communicate verbally and in writing.
• Sit for prolonged periods, walk, bend, and lift up to 35 pounds occasionally.
• Organize and prioritize tasks.
• Potential exposure to occupational hazards, including bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials; use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required.

Requirements

• Current unrestricted Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Wisconsin.
• Minimum of 2 years RN experience (equivalent nursing experience may be considered).
• Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and proof of current automobile insurance coverage.
