Prevention Specialist (Part Time)

About the Role

This position is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of activities essential to the delivery of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Abuse Prevention and Violence Prevention Services for pre-school through grade 12. The role also involves participating in public relations, community outreach, and marketing events.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct ATOD prevention services to students in pre-school, elementary, and secondary schools, including teaching in-class lessons and other assigned activities.
  • Assist teachers, administrators, and school personnel in implementing, supporting, and following up on Saint Vincent College Prevention Projects Prevention Education Services, including after-school meetings, curriculum consultation, and planning in-school prevention activities.
  • Assist in designing and developing ATOD and Violence Prevention lessons, props, workshops, and special trainings that support program objectives.
  • Assist in the development, collection, and tabulation of program and training evaluation materials.
  • Develop and provide prevention information and materials to parent groups, community coalitions, and organizations, which may require hours beyond the normal workday.
  • Work to obtain and/or maintain professional credentials (e.g., Certified Prevention Specialist) through trainings, workshops, and staff development events.
  • Stay current with changes in the field and maintain relevant skills and knowledge in drug and alcohol prevention, conflict resolution, and violence prevention.
  • Maintain accurate program reporting and billing data, including population supported, audiences served, hours, and activities.
  • Input required data entry information regarding school services (e.g., online data entry).
  • Assist in designing workshops and training sessions for school or other professionals and participate in their presentation.
  • Attend Prevention Specialists’ staff meetings and contribute to program strategies as appropriate.
  • Maintain, use, and return program materials (e.g., props, AV equipment, puppets, manuals).
  • Participate in public relations, community outreach, and marketing efforts.
  • Respond professionally to all service recipients and funding sources.
  • Maintain a positive work attitude and promote cooperation and professionalism among staff.
  • Attend internal and external meetings and perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education; certified at the Pre-school through Secondary Level.
  • Advanced degree in Education or a related discipline is desirable.
  • Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) certification is desirable.
  • Preferably three years of experience in teaching, counseling, or human services at the Pre-school through 12th grade level.
  • Knowledgeable in current ATOD and/or violence prevention processes.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
  • Current Act 34 & 151 Clearances.
  • Ability to lift and transport classroom equipment (20-40 pounds).
  • Willingness to travel throughout Westmoreland and surrounding counties to deliver services.
  • Flexibility with work hours.

Special Challenges and Environment

This role involves working in both a standard office environment and classrooms throughout Westmoreland and surrounding counties. The position requires physical capability to lift and transport classroom equipment weighing 20-40 pounds.
