PREVENTION SPECIALIST

Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc. – 12-month full-time, non-exempt position funded through an IHS contract.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Additional consideration given for a 2-year or 4-year college degree.
• 20+ hours of continuing education in substance abuse and human services, or 1+ years of experience in prevention or substance abuse treatment.
• Must be a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) through the Albuquerque Area Inter-Tribal Council on Substance Abuse and the State of New Mexico, or obtain certification within two years of employment.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Experience working with diverse cultural backgrounds, including Native American clients. Fluency in Navajo language is a plus.
• If recovering from substance dependence, must have three years of continuous sobriety prior to hiring.
• Employees hired after November 30, 2011, must demonstrate an 8.0 average grade-level reading and communication ability (via TABE or equivalent), unless holding a Master’s degree or above. Employees below this level must enroll in a workplace literacy program and show progress toward the 8.0 benchmark.

Indian Preference: Preferential consideration for employees will be given to persons of documented Navajo, American Indian, or Alaska Native tribal membership who meet the qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Deliver substance abuse prevention programs in Alamo and Magdalena Schools, including classroom presentations for K-12 grades.
• Collaborate with school staff to align substance abuse curricula with school offerings.
• Organize and participate in after-school and summer recreation programs combining skill-building, socialization, and prevention activities, such as:
  • Individual and team sports
  • Hiking, camping, ropes courses, and rock climbing
  • Indoor games, crafts, films, and videos
  • Off-reservation trips (museums, sporting events, swimming, etc.)
  • Youth conferences and workshops focused on drug-free topics
• Educate the Alamo community on sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, and their connection to substance abuse.
• Plan and implement local promotional events and media campaigns emphasizing prevention and healthy lifestyles.
• Conduct community-wide substance abuse education for adults and adolescents as directed by the Child & Adolescent BHS Coordinator.
• Provide preliminary screenings for youth seeking help for substance abuse or emotional/behavioral issues related to parental substance abuse, and refer them to outpatient treatment counselors.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation of client services in compliance with BHS and funding source requirements.
• Pursue ongoing professional development, including maintaining CPS certification and adhering to ethical standards.
• Adhere to ANSB, Inc. and Alamo Navajo Health Center policies and procedures.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Special Conditions

• This is a child-sensitive position requiring fingerprinting and a criminal/character background investigation.

Pay

Pay range varies by qualifications:

• Grade H: With CPS certification and a college degree
• Grade G: With CPS certification
• Grade F: Without CPS certification

Schedule

• Normal working hours: 8 AM – 5 PM, 40 hours per week
• One-hour lunch break
