About the role

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not‑for‑profit service and research organization that partners with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice to provide pretrial services to over 100,000 arrested individuals each year. CJA interviews individuals in Central Booking, makes release recommendations to the court, and assists with bail payment to reduce unnecessary detention. Pretrial Associates (PTAs) work 24/7 in the city's centralized courthouses, conducting interviews, verifying information, explaining bail procedures, and supporting individuals and their families through the court process.

Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly and compassionately interview recently arrested individuals in Central Booking locations across all boroughs to assess community ties.
  • Conduct telephone verifications of provided information such as address, employment, possible sureties, and other factors influencing release recommendations.
  • Explain bail payment procedures and assist sureties with the bail payment process.
  • Accurately record interview responses into the agency’s computerized database.
  • Determine release recommendations using CJA’s standardized release assessment, which combines criminal history and community ties information.
  • Observe and monitor arraignment outcomes and assist individuals who have bail imposed.
  • Participate in interdepartmental programs such as the Bail Expediting Program, identifying eligible cases and making follow‑up calls to sureties to expedite bail payment at court.
  • Interact respectfully with NYPD, DOC, NYS Court Officers, Supervised Release programs, Court Clerks, Legal Aid, and other court players to facilitate procedures and represent CJA professionally.
  • Contribute to and work on innovative pilot programs in the boroughs, suggesting potential improvements.
