Preschool Teacher

Location: 6440 Saint Therese Way, San Diego, CA 92120
Reports to: Preschool Director
Employment Type: Full‑Time (7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday)
Pay Rate: $21 /hour, based on experience

About the role

The professional hired will be responsible for the general supervision and management of children between the ages of two and five years of age.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and implement the program for the class in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the Diocese of San Diego.
• Get materials and supplies ready for the day and set up equipment inside the classroom and on the playground.
• Prepare naptime by setting up mats and placing bedding in bags at the beginning of the week.
• Assist with general housekeeping tasks to provide a safe and clean classroom environment, including disinfecting high‑traffic areas, clearing and cleaning sinks, countertops, and tabletops, and sweeping.
• Supervise students during lunch, snack, recess, on the playgrounds, and while in line; for outside play, oversee transitions to the playground.
• Assist students having difficulty resting during naptime.
• Recognize student needs and provide solutions.
• Comply with California state and county codes and licensing regulations.
• Follow classroom rules determined by lead teachers and/or the director.
• Supervise bathrooms as needed, including changing children who have had bathroom accidents.
• Attend all professional development trainings, school functions, and staff meetings.
• Perform other jobs, tasks, or duties deemed necessary for a smooth‑functioning program as assigned by the director.

Requirements

Religious Qualifications:

• Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred).
• Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy.

Professional Qualifications:

• Proof of completion of 12 or more Early Childhood Education (ECE) units.
• Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Understanding of the stages of early childhood development and learning progressions.
• Ability to solve problems and provide solutions.
• Ability to cope with a stressful environment.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and duties based on the needs of children and teachers.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
• Team player.

Physical Requirements

• Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom, frequently holding objects.
• Sit occasionally when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
• Walk through the classroom and maneuver in tight spaces between desks; walk on both even and uneven surfaces.
• Kneel, squat, stoop, or bend while interacting with students.
• Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation.
• Assist in moving children’s desks and chairs to change the classroom layout.
• Occasionally lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Remain mobile within the classroom and preschool environment; attend meetings, trainings, and other work‑related events throughout the school facility.
• May be required to travel to city and county locations for trainings or workshops.
