Preschool Substitute Teacher

About the role

The Preschool Substitute Teacher supports the wellbeing and development of children in the IRCO Preschool and Indian Hills Elementary programs. They follow Oregon state licensing guidelines and early childhood best practices.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a welcoming, clean, organized, and safe environment for children.
• Promote a multilingual/multi-background, family-engaged environment.
• Adhere to Preschool Promise and Oregon Child Care Center licensing requirements and guidelines.
• Assist children with activities of daily life and support their independence.
• Promote health and safety by following cleaning and sanitizing procedures.
• Observe strict confidentiality with children's health, development, and medication administration.
• Establish a professional rapport with families to provide quality care and friendly service.
• Support the teaching team in completing necessary paperwork, including lesson plans and attendance.

Requirements

• High level proficiency in written and spoken English; bilingual preferred.
• Registration in the Central Background Registry.
• Completion of required health and safety training before working with children.
• Education and experience: High School or GED, less than one year of experience required; coursework and/or community-based training in child development and early education preferred; at least 6 months of experience working with young children; ability to work independently and as part of a team; knowledge and understanding of immigrant and refugee cultures and local populations; bilingual in English and a second language preferred; ability to work in a multi-background environment and communicate clearly orally and in writing; proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point; compassionate with the ability to adapt to stressful conditions and manage time efficiently; ability to function in a positive manner in a demanding work environment, to demonstrate a high degree of flexibility, to respond to priorities and schedules that change frequently, and to meet commitments; maintain a high level of confidentiality; strong intercultural communication skills with varied communities; communicate in a positive manner verbally, in writing, and by phone to individuals and groups; communicate with a variety of personality types and levels of the organization as well as with people outside of the organization; must be punctual, maintain a good attendance record, and be able to work flexible hours to meet the availability of program needs.
• Physical, mental, and environmental requirements: In-person, classroom setting with daily time outdoors; moderate physical effort or manual labor; occasional discomfort relative to noise, temperature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, or interactions with angry or hostile people; schedule: mostly stable and does not fluctuate without prior notice; supervisory responsibilities: not responsible for any supervisory functions, or responsibilities, but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers.
