Full-time, exempt position based on campus with in-person hours Monday–Friday 8:30 AM–5:00 PM and occasional evenings or weekends.

About the role

Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising, the Academic Advisor provides academic and career advising to Rivier students as they plan their academic experience and intended career path.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and career advising for students through individual and group meetings at orientation programs and throughout the year.
  • Assist students with decisions about majors, the process of declaring or changing majors, and guide students during course enrollment periods.
  • Provide information on academic support resources and help students develop a responsible approach to academic planning.
  • Offer career counseling and coaching to students at all levels, both individually and in groups.
  • Assist students in identifying interests and abilities.
  • Facilitate career development workshops, introduce students to career resources, review resumes and job search correspondence.
  • Guide students through graduate and professional school options and help them make effective choices.
  • Create, organize, and support major Career Development Center events such as career fairs, internship programs, graduate and professional school fairs, and first-year orientation events.
  • Collaborate with faculty and Academic Affairs to ensure students receive the most current information and maintain a continuous feedback loop to benefit students.
  • Contribute to outcomes assessment of student learning and evaluation of programs and services.
  • Support institutional, divisional, and departmental mission and goals.
  • Participate in planning, serve on committees or task force groups, and engage in professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in student personnel administration, higher education, or a related field is required.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices used in academic advising, career development, and career counseling, with a willingness to obtain additional training.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with experience in group facilitation, program presentation, and teaching.
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of professional experience in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Self-starter with the ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to advocate for and support the academic, personal, and professional needs of students.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty and staff and maintain collegial relations.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in an emerging and changing environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including word-processing, reporting platforms, online calendaring, and email (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, CAMS, and Canvas).
