About the role

To support the lead teacher in providing preschool students with optimal learning opportunities in all areas of development. We are looking for people who enjoy being part of a school community and can implement educational programs for students.

Salary: $12.25 - $16.75/hour. Placement within this range is based on relevant qualifications, including prior experience, education, and applicable certifications (e.g., bachelor's degree, advanced certification, bilingual proficiency, etc.).

Reports to: Principal/Teacher. Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.

Schedule

  • Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (times may vary depending on building assignment)
  • Average workday: 7.5 hours
  • Flexible hours depending on availability
  • Regular school year (10-month) positions; options for summer employment
  • New employees go through a 45-day introductory period as part of onboarding

Responsibilities

  • Supports the lead teacher in maintaining a classroom environment conducive to effective learning
  • Assists the lead teacher in supporting social/emotional growth of students through modeling, role playing, and guiding students to solve problems
  • Guides students in maintaining acceptable standards of classroom behavior in an age-appropriate manner, treating misbehavior as learning opportunities
  • Works with individual students or small groups to provide literacy, math, or social/emotional interventions as determined by the lead teacher
  • Encourages oral communication by modeling fluent reading, listening to students read, and encouraging conversation among students and adults
  • Engages with students in indoor play, enhancing the experience through open-ended and higher-level thinking questions
  • Assists the lead teacher in developing gross motor skills through intentional interactions and play during outdoor activities
  • Promotes healthy eating and wellness practices by assisting with handwashing, meal setup, and discussing nutrition while encouraging conversation
  • Demonstrates instructional and interpersonal strategies responsive to cultural, ethnic, economic, and linguistic differences
  • Assumes responsibilities of the lead teacher during absences or contractual obligations
  • Assists in evaluating student progress and reporting at designated times
  • Helps prepare materials and interventions for individual students during designated times (e.g., rest time)
  • Ensures accurate and frequent communication with families in line with lead teacher and administration expectations
  • Attends and participates in ongoing professional development and faculty meetings
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the teacher or building administration
