PreSchool Aide (Part-Time)

Nature of Position

Preschool teacher aides help the lead teacher in managing a classroom of children who are five years or younger. They instruct and supervise them in social and developmental activities, help feed and change them, and generally provide one-on-one attention when needed. It is usually the responsibility of the preschool teacher's assistant to plan activities for children, such as storytelling or art projects. He or she must help organize the classroom and plan intellectual activities for children, per the lead teacher's requests.

Responsibilities

• Supervision: Ensure the safety of all children under care in the classroom, on the playground, or on school outings. This includes knowing where all children are, stopping unsafe activity, helping injured children, and taking appropriate actions in an emergency.
• Personal Care: Help children with personal care needs including using the bathroom, hand-washing, feeding/serving meals, changing clothes, changing diapers, and assisting with potty training. Allow children to do as much as possible independently and teach skills.
• Non-Instructional Duties: Handle clerical duties such as filling out incident reports, working on bulletin boards or displays, duplicating, laminating, and preparing instructional materials. Also perform basic cleaning duties such as disinfecting toys and equipment or cleaning up after mealtimes/snacks.
• Instructional Duties: Work with students in small groups after teacher instruction, read to students, work on projects, and reinforce material per lesson plans. Assist preschoolers with basic tasks such as cutting, pasting, and writing. Work with substitutes to ensure daily routine remains intact.
• Interact with children, prepare snacks, teach children about numbers, colors, and shapes, and help them get dressed.
• Evaluate students' social development and physical well-being.
• Take on the role of lead teacher when needed.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Experience: Previous teaching experience or experience working with children preferred.
• Personal Qualities: Friendly and inviting. Ability to adapt easily and enjoy learning.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Must be willing to respect the Catholic Church and follow the code of conduct.
