Job Title: Surgical Veterinary Technician Job Description We are seeking a dedicated Surgical Veterinary Technician to join our team. This role involves performing surgical preparation and providing care for laboratory animals during surgical preparation and recovery, supporting interventional and surgical studies according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and study protocols, while adhering to both GLP and non-GLP study guidelines. Responsibilities Maintain knowledge of applicable SOPs and GLP regulations to effectively perform job duties in the preclinical research environment.Monitor animals during the initial post-operative critical recovery phase, including performing TPRs (temperature, pulse, respiration), auscultation of the heart and lungs, assessing pain at incision sites, changing wound dressings, and administering medications.Prepare animals for surgery, including performing anesthetic calculations, sedation and induction, intubation, IV catheter placement, monitoring anesthesia, specimen collections, and surgical site preparation.Perform and document a variety of activities, including monitoring and charting physiological data during surgical prep and recovery, and documentation of medication administration.Dispense medications as prescribed by veterinarians or protocol specifications.Collect necessary lab work such as blood, fecal, and urine samples, and process them accordingly.Communicate with veterinary staff, supervisors, and study directors regarding the medical status of animals and their recovery process.Operate, clean, and maintain gas anesthesia machines, autoclaves, and other surgical equipment routinely used.Maintain an efficient and clean work area by organizing surgical prep and recovery areas.Assist with other duties as assigned. Essential Skills Proficiency in animal handling and anesthesia.Experience in animal recovery and veterinary techniques.Ability to perform technical, hands-on tasks related to animal surgery. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in veterinary, biology, or related animal science field.Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or ALAT certification is preferred.Background in animal research, animal science, zoology, veterinary studies, biology, animal husbandry, or animal health.Experience with the job duties listed or an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable. Work Environment The work environment includes handling animals such as pigs, sheep, and dogs within the Large Animal Operations. The role focuses on preparing animals for surgery and monitoring them during the first-phase recovery as they wake from anesthesia. You will work closely with Large Animal Research Techs and Surgical Techs, each with specific job duties, but collaborating closely on each study. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Minneapolis, MN. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $47840.00 - $52000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. New shoes are required to start in this role but candidates will be reimbursed for their purchase as long as they keep their receipt. Workplace Type This is a fully onsite position in Minneapolis,MN.
