Preconstruction Manager (BESS)
About the role
The Preconstruction Manager plays a critical part in shaping utility-scale BESS projects by combining technical expertise with collaboration and team empowerment. They work closely with cross-functional teams, influence project strategies, and drive innovative solutions that advance renewable energy.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with Business Development, Engineering, Scheduling, Estimating, and Operations to align project needs and competitive cost and schedule strategies.
Review RFP documents to confirm scope, schedule, and design criteria; identify risks and recommend clarifications or negotiation points.
Manage RFP deliverables and deadlines, ensuring proposals meet client requirements and reflect our commitment to quality and clarity.
Support Business Development by ensuring all RFP requirements are addressed or clarified in proposals.
Advocate for the customer, ensuring their goals and priorities are clearly understood and integrated into pursuit planning and decisions.
Assume ownership of the project immediately following award or preferred bidder selection. Lead and support EPC Agreement negotiations in partnership with Legal, Business Development, and Executive Leadership.
Coordinate constructability and risk reviews, maintaining the proposal commercial, technical, and execution risk profile during Owner contract negotiations.
Identify and manage Owner contract deliverables; oversee LNTP activities, billing, and receipts in accordance with contract terms, schedule milestones, scope, compliance, and budget.
Drive timely execution of PSAs, POs, and subcontractor agreements in partnership with Procurement.
Leverage technology, safety practices, and knowledge sharing to enhance team productivity and project success.
Manage preconstruction deliverables and ensure alignment with Owner requirements and project objectives.
Maintain and evolve the project risk register from award through FNTP.
Preserve bid intent through contract execution and LNTP/FNTP issuance.
Support risk mitigation efforts and apply best practices to improve efficiency and profitability.
Maintain clear communication with internal teams and stakeholders to ensure readiness for construction handover.
Lead formal handover of project ownership from Preconstruction to Operations, ensuring clarity and continuity.
Support Operations by providing context on design decisions, vendor and subcontractor selections, and contract terms.
Participate in internal project and risk reviews to capture lessons learned and apply insights to future proposals.
Collaborate with Business Development and Estimating on change order reviews from Award to FNTP.
Track buyout metrics and share feedback to drive continuous improvement across projects.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, construction management, business, or related field.
Strong understanding of EPC contracts, including legal, commercial, and technical terms.
Solid knowledge of scheduling and risk management principles.
Proficiency in budget and cash flow analysis.
Experience in power plant EPC required; BESS EPC experience highly preferred.
