Pre-Analytical Assistant
Job Description
The Pre-Analytical Assistant I is responsible for general support functions within the Technical Operations Department. Tasks and responsibilities must be performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner.
- Sorting
- Racking
- Pickup and delivery of specimens to the laboratory
- Specimen storage (including running sorters in archive mode)
- Centrifugation
- Aliquoting
Demonstrates an ability to learn the job duties assigned and understands how all functions in Tech Ops and Specimen Processing work together.
Identifies problems with specimen types, missing information, etc., and resolves or forwards information to support timely problem resolution.
Demonstrates an understanding of compliance policies related to test ordering, requiring the ability to research test order information on translation tables, computer systems, and the directory of services.
Maintains quality and production standards within 6 months of completing training.
Completes all required written documentation that is understandable, legible, and within the assigned timeframe.
Reports to work on time and follows attendance guidelines, supporting the department’s performance in the event of coworker absences.
Learns additional functions within Tech Ops and Specimen Processing to facilitate progression to the next level.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Medical background preferred with medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
- Handles multiple tasks simultaneously and works in a production environment
- Communicates effectively with all levels of staff both verbally and in writing
- Maintains composure under pressure and demonstrates good judgment in resolving problems
- Works in a biohazard environment, adhering to all safety requirements
- Keeps work area neat and clean, complying with 5S workplace standards
- Able to sit, stand, or walk for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs., maneuver large carts or racks with specimens
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills fostering a positive working environment
- Flexible with work schedule and willing to adapt to change
- Previous experience in a production environment preferred
- Familiarity with mainframe computers preferred
- Minimal data entry skills
- Good organizational skills
- Understanding of specimen types related to test(s) ordered
- Knowledge of clinical department requirements regarding specimen types and quantities needed for each test, specimen handling, and delivery
- Understanding of compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to change and pursue continuous improvement
- Commitment to fulfilling internal and external customer requirements
- Willingness to contribute to a team-based working environment
