POWER SYSTEMS - TRAINEE

About the Role

Under the direction of the Director of Campus Planning and Facilities or their designated supervisor, the Power Systems Operator Trainee operates and maintains the heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, water supply, plumbing, and electrical systems. Additionally, the role assists during inclement weather with safety, prevention, and removal of snow/ice buildup on site. The employee has a period of 3 years to achieve adequate levels of competency, including passing 30-day and 90-day tests, completing all training (provided by Power Systems Leads and assigned bookwork), and obtaining the Building Operators Certification (BOC) credential.

Responsibilities

• Assist with set-ups for on-campus events, including monitoring the electronic facilities reservation system for initial set-ups or changes based on client needs and restoring spaces to their original configuration.
• Monitor the electronic work order system and enter information on assigned work orders for departmental tracking.
• Minimal daily interaction with the electronic mail system, responding as necessary, and maintaining a personal calendar.
• Complete all assigned web-based or in-person training courses as directed by Human Resources and/or supervisors.
• Attend all mandatory college and departmental meetings and continuing education training, with shift adjustments made to accommodate training schedules.
• Conduct rounds minimally once per standard 10-hour shift, with two or more extended shifts as needed.
• Maintain knowledge of all gas, water, electrical, and fire alarm system panels.
• Inspect, operate, and maintain all boilers, heating and air-conditioning systems, including standalone and geothermal systems.
• Maintain all plumbing fixtures, including hand and mop sinks, toilets, urinals, etc.
• Operate and maintain water supply, storm, and sanitary drain systems, performing repairs such as snaking drains and replacing parts.
• Operate and maintain wire ballasts, switches, breakers, and change fuses.
• Maintain records on all equipment, inspections, repairs, parts, usage, and maintenance performed.
• Maintain motors and pumps, including routine inspection, troubleshooting, and replacing units or parts.
• Maintain on-call status while at work, cover shifts for co-workers as needed, and may be required to work holidays.
• Perform other duties as assigned within the job classification.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
• Minimum of one year of related experience.

Knowledge and Skills

• Basic proficiency with computer operation.
• Basic knowledge of electrical (building and machinery), HVAC systems, carpentry, and plumbing systems.
• Ability to work on ladders or in tight spaces, as well as outside in all types of weather.
• Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
• Ability to work well with others.
• Ability to operate machinery such as snow removal equipment, lifts, and forklifts (preferred, but training will be provided as necessary).
• Obtain and maintain the Building Operators Certification (BOC) credential.
• Good physical condition to perform duties requiring stooping, bending, lifting (up to 65 lbs.), and climbing ladders.
• General mechanical ability.

• Occasionally required to access elevated and lower-level areas and lift objects of light to heavy weight.
• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and vibration.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate but can be loud during certain assignments.
