Job Summary

Resource Adequacy provides engineering, economic analysis, and other technical support for resource adequacy and risk assessment, transmission planning, and grid integration studies in compliance with ERCOT Protocols, the Planning Guide, and NERC standards. Conducts system modeling and analyzes simulated or actual operating results. Develops tools and procedures for reporting resource status and trends. Supports or conducts analyses requested by other ERCOT staff or Market Participant groups. Manages and operates production cost and other system simulation models to support capacity expansion studies, probabilistic loss of load studies, and grid integration analysis for renewable and emerging resource technologies.

Job Duties

  • Assists with capacity expansion and probabilistic loss of load studies.
  • Supports the preparation of resource adequacy reports; conducts reviews of reports prepared by other department staff.
  • Helps prepare responses to public inquiries and data filing requests from the North American Reliability Corporation and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
  • Maintains awareness of developments in generation markets and fuel delivery that could impact resource reliability; prepares reports and briefing materials on related topics.
  • Communicates with generator owners and other ERCOT market participants on resource adequacy and reliability impacts of state/federal regulations, drought conditions, fuel supply disruptions and market development trends.
  • Supports analysis requests made by the ERCOT Supply Analysis Working Group and other groups under the Wholesale Market Subcommittee.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or a combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with knowledge equivalent to a major in such fields.
  • Minimum 2 years (in excess of degree requirements stated above) of progressively responsible experience as a power system engineer or similar type role.
  • Experience within the electric utility industry preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with grid simulation tools for determining electricity production costs and/or optimal generation capacity expansion.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment techniques using scenario analysis and probabilistic modeling methods such as Monte Carlo simulation.
  • Programming languages: Python, SQL, Visual Basic for Applications.

Certifications

  • Professional Engineer registration in Texas preferred.

Work Location

This position is Hybrid. Employees will be required to be on-site in Taylor, TX at least 2-3 days per week, or more, as needed based on the business needs as determined by management. On-site schedules are flexible or may be rotated based on business needs as determined by the Manager. Remote work is required to be performed from your Texas residence. Employees may opt to work on-site more than required or 100% of the time.

Salary and Level

The salary and level will be based on overall experience as determined by ERCOT. Expected Salary Range: $87,000 - $120,000.
