Power Systems Engineer I - Arc Flash Boot Camp Winter 2027
About the role
Power your future with Qualus as a Power Systems Engineer through our Qualus University's Winter 2027 Engineering Boot Camp. As a participant, you will be considered a full-time Engineer I and paired with a structured training & development program designed to accelerate your growth in the power industry. The program includes focused classroom instruction led by seasoned Qualus engineers and industry experts, immersive site visits, hands-on substation safety and equipment training, and guided preparation for the FE exam to build a strong technical foundation from day one.
The Winter 2027 Engineering Boot Camp starts in January 2027, and participants will receive an offer to become full-time employees with Qualus.
Responsibilities
- Perform short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies for commercial, industrial, education, healthcare, and generation facilities using SKM, ETAP, and/or Easypower software.
- Apply knowledge of low and medium-voltage switchgear, motor control centers, circuit breakers, panel boards, and disconnects to determine cost-effective mitigation solutions from power system study results and recommendations.
- Develop study reports and communicate results and recommendations to customers.
- Perform data collection activities.
- Develop and/or implement arc flash mitigation designs.
- Interpret new construction drawing packages.
- Develop relay protective setpoints and settings files.
- Develop and/or update equipment control schematics, one-lines, three-lines, and wiring diagrams.
- Work on project teams to support quality and project management goals, meeting all project deadlines.
- Maintain up-to-date technical skills related to the design of electrical substations and protection and control schematics for the electric utility power grid through on-the-job work and formal training.
- Successfully execute small to medium-sized projects with limited oversight, self-managing assigned projects and job cost accountability to perform work within budgeted cost estimates.
- Effectively communicate with other departments and customers to ensure activities are properly coordinated.
Requirements
- BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited school (Mechanical Engineering degrees accepted for some roles) with a focus on power systems.
- Ability to travel 50-70% of the time.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- Educational experience directly related to working with medium to high voltage electricity (preferred).
- Knowledge of test equipment and tool/wiring usage.
- Ability to work independently and accurately with high attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively discuss technical recommendations with customers.
- Strong computer skills.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
