Power Systems Electrical Engineer III - Power Generation

Calpine Corporation seeks an experienced Electrical Engineer III to support reliable, lower-carbon power generation across its natural gas and geothermal fleet. In this role, you will design, analyze, and optimize electrical systems, perform power system studies, and support plant operations with troubleshooting and reliability improvements. You will develop and review single-line diagrams, equipment specs, and protection schemes, ensuring compliance with safety, NERC, and industry standards. Working in a collaborative, data-driven environment, you will lead medium-complexity projects, mentor junior engineers, and drive continuous improvement in efficiency, grid reliability, and environmental performance across Calpine's generation assets. Responsibilities Design, analyze, and optimize electrical systems for natural gas-fired and geothermal power plantsPerform power system studies, load flow, short circuit, and protective relay coordination analysesSupport plant operations and maintenance with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and reliability improvementsDevelop and review single-line diagrams, specifications, and equipment selection for projects and upgradesEnsure compliance with safety standards, NERC, IEEE, and applicable codes and regulationsCollaborate with operations, mechanical, and controls teams on grid reliability and performance initiativesLead medium-complexity projects, manage engineering deliverables, and support contractors and vendorsImplement data-driven improvements to plant efficiency, reliability, and environmental performancePrepare technical reports, calculations, and documentation to support capital and maintenance projectsMentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement and best-practice sharing Required Skills Power system analysis (load flow, short circuit, protection coordination)Design of medium and high voltage systemsETAP/SKM/PSCAD or similar analysis toolsProtection and control systemsSingle-line diagrams and equipment specificationsRoot cause analysis and reliability engineeringNERC and industry electrical standards complianceProject engineering and coordinationSCADA and substation/control systems familiarityTechnical reporting and documentation
