Join a leading employee-owned engineering, consulting, procurement, and construction organization as a Power System Protection Engineer on its Protective Relay Settings Team. This full-time, permanent role offers the chance to work on complex, impactful projects across the power industry with hybrid or flexible work arrangements available based on business needs.
About the role
The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of experience in the electric utility, power generation, or renewable energy sectors, specializing in protection and control design, protective relay settings, power system modeling, and relay manufacturer software platforms.
Responsibilities
- Develop protective relay settings and setpoints in accordance with client requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
- Perform power system modeling and analysis using tools such as ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, and SKM.
- Develop and maintain relay setting files utilizing manufacturer software platforms such as SEL AcSELerator QuickSet and GE Enervista.
- Design, configure, and modify logic associated with protection and control systems.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, studies, and other project deliverables.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams.
- Review engineering work completed by junior team members.
- Support project planning, resource coordination, budgeting, scheduling, and quality control activities.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver successful project outcomes.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers and contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Support proposal development, project pursuits, and client relationship activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
- 5-10 years of experience within transmission, distribution, power generation, or renewable energy industries.
- Minimum 5 years of experience developing protective relay settings.
- Experience with Protection & Control design including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Strong experience with power system analysis software: ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM.
- Knowledge of transmission, distribution, and renewable substation protection schemes.
- Experience performing relay setting calculations using Mathcad and Excel.
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, MMS, and SEL protocols.
- Knowledge of IEC 61850, including GOOSE, MMS, and Sampled Values (SV).
- Understanding of NERC protection standards and related industry requirements.
- Experience leading projects and coordinating schedules, budgets, and staffing requirements.
- Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) experience.
- Strong communication, client-facing, and leadership skills.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
