Power System Operations Engineer II

As part of MISO’s Real Time Operations group—where the “rubber meets the road”—you will collaborate with operators and engineers to make complex, quick decisions. This team coordinates the use of the transmission system by ensuring flows stay within prescribed limits and partners with transmission operators and neighboring reliability coordinators to maintain reliability.

This position is an Engineer in Reserve role, where you will train and hone your skills until you qualify for a shift position. You will learn to maintain the accuracy and availability of one of the most important Energy Management Systems (EMS) in the Eastern Interconnection. Training will include monitoring inputs from ICCP and SCADA into the State Estimator, obtaining accurate contingency analysis study results, and providing study results that assist in making MISO the most reliable, value-creating RTO. You will also have the opportunity to participate in projects that lead the way for the operations of the future.

In one year, you will know you were successful if you have developed familiarity with the MISO footprint, built foundational expertise in maintaining the EMS and its inputs, can carry discussions about operations processes, and have established relationships with operators and external/internal stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Train to monitor inputs from ICCP and SCADA into the State Estimator.

• Collaborate with operators and stakeholders to maintain transmission system reliability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in one of the following:
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology
• Ability and willingness to work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule.
• At least two years of related working experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in utility, transmission operations, real-time operations, or a related field.
• Previous Energy Management System (EMS) experience.
• Transient/Voltage stability experience.
• Programming experience in C, C++, VBA, Perl, or Python.

Pay

The base salary compensation range for this role is $95,000 - $105,000 USD annually. Salaries may vary based on factors such as location, individual competencies, education, professional certifications, and qualifications/experience. In addition to base salary, you will receive a 7.5% shift differential. The position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met.
