About the role

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Power, Standards, and Hardware Development Manager to serve as a technical authority for power systems, standards, and hardware engineering within Amazon's global fulfillment center network.

Responsibilities

  • Design, engineer, and optimize 3-phase power systems and power distribution for industrial and commercial material handling applications.

  • Design and specify Main Distribution Boards (MDBs), Power Distribution Panels (PDPs), and electrical substations, ensuring proper sizing, protection coordination, and compliance with project and code requirements.

  • Develop single-line diagrams, power distribution schematics, and panel schedules to support facility and equipment power needs.

  • Perform power quality analysis, fault current studies, and coordination studies to ensure system reliability and safety.

  • Oversee the selection and specification of transformers, switchgear, breakers, bus ducts, and other power distribution equipment.

  • Design modular and scalable power distribution systems that prioritize reliability, maintainability, and performance.

  • Establish best practices for panel placement, grounding, and safety circuit design.

  • Perform detailed electrical load calculations including demand factor analysis, diversity factors, and future capacity planning.

  • Perform arc flash calculations and hazard analysis in accordance with IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E, determining incident energy levels, arc flash boundaries, and appropriate PPE categories for all electrical equipment.

  • Develop and maintain arc flash labeling programs and ensure all MDBs, PDPs, substations, and downstream equipment are properly labeled and compliant.

  • Prepare and review complete Architectural/Engineering (A/E) drawing sets, including electrical plans, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and equipment layouts.

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, structural, civil) to ensure integrated and constructible designs.

  • Manage drawing revisions, as-built documentation, and ensure compliance with project specifications.

  • Analyze utilities data including electrical consumption, demand profiles, power factor, and load trends across fulfillment center operations.

  • Monitor and evaluate utility rate structures, demand charges, and energy usage patterns to identify cost optimization opportunities.

  • Develop utilities dashboards and reporting mechanisms to track power consumption, peak demand, and efficiency metrics across facilities.

  • Collaborate with Facilities and Operations teams to provide data-driven recommendations for power system upgrades, capacity planning, and energy efficiency improvements.

  • Support utility coordination efforts including service entrance requirements, utility metering, and interconnection agreements for new and existing facilities.

  • Lead the hardware design and development of electrical and electromechanical systems, including:

    • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) — selection, programming, integration, and commissioning.
    • Sensors — specification, calibration, and deployment of industrial sensors (temperature, pressure, vibration, current, etc.).
    • Predictive Maintenance Systems — design and implementation of condition-monitoring hardware, remote monitoring, and IoT-based predictive maintenance solutions.
    • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies including DC power systems and AI-powered diagnostics.
  • Drive prototype development, testing, validation, and production-readiness of hardware solutions.

  • Develop technology that creates or maintains competitive advantage in power systems and hardware.

  • Prepare, develop, and maintain technical specifications for the OneMHS program, ensuring alignment with organizational standards and project requirements.

  • Author and review equipment specifications, performance criteria, and acceptance test procedures for MHS components and subsystems.

  • Collaborate with OneMHS program stakeholders, vendors, and cross-functional teams to define and standardize specification requirements across projects.

  • Ensure all OneMHS specifications incorporate power, controls, safety, and code compliance requirements.

  • Audit electrical system designs to identify opportunities and develop superior solutions.

  • Drive continuous improvement of specification templates and documentation processes to support scalability and consistency across the OneMHS program.

  • Develop and document repeatable electrical processes for scaled deployment.

  • Ensure all designs, installations, and hardware solutions comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) / NFPA 70 and other applicable standards.

  • Use electrical reliability and maintenance expertise to perform gap assessments to industry standards.

  • Conduct design reviews and audits to verify code compliance and identify potential safety risks.

  • Stay current with NEC code revisions, NFPA updates, and industry regulatory changes.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of electrical engineers, designers, and technicians.

  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation for power and hardware development initiatives.

  • Lead design reviews for complex and critical power and hardware systems at site and region levels.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders including Operations, Facilities, Construction, WWDE, and Safety teams.

  • Manage relationships with 3P partners for power system design, permitting, and installation.

  • Build consensus and harmonize differing views on power system approaches.

  • Educate the broader fulfillment center engineering community on advanced power system issues.

  • Support development of electrical implementation playbooks and ensure effective knowledge transfer and documentation.

  • Contribute to intellectual property (inventions, patents) in power systems and hardware engineering.

  • Execute power and hardware projects through all phases from initiation through commissioning.

  • Drive continuous improvement in project delivery methods and execution standards.

  • Identify and mitigate risks proactively.

  • Maintain stakeholder alignment and satisfaction throughout project lifecycle.

  • Use data and metrics to back up assumptions and evaluate outcomes.
