Power Plant Manager
About the role
The Power Plant Manager oversees the operations and maintenance of the University of Massachusetts Amherst Central Heating Plant, ensuring compliance with all permits, laws, and regulations. They develop and implement work schedules, recruit and train staff, establish and maintain operating procedures, and manage the plant's maintenance and repair activities.
Responsibilities
- Directs plant operations to meet campus heating needs and maintain efficiency and reliability.
- Ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards.
- Develops and implements work schedules for 24-hour plant operations.
- Hires and trains new employees as needed.
- Establishes and maintains operating and maintenance procedures.
- Reviews and improves operational processes and ensures personnel training.
- Writes and maintains reports on equipment efficiency, energy consumption, and operational logs.
- Investigates and resolves operating abnormalities and incidents.
- Schedules repairs and maintenance of plant equipment according to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Requisitions and verifies fuel oil, chemical, equipment, and consumable inventory.
- Coordinates gas usage nominations with Berkshire Gas Company and the University's suppliers.
- Makes recommendations to the Director of Utilities Engineering regarding operations, maintenance, and capital budgets.
- Supports environmental, health, and safety reporting.
- Performs other related technical duties and administrative tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Renewable Energy, or Business Administration, or an Associate’s Degree with relevant experience.
- Four (4) years’ supervisory or managerial experience in a Power Plant, or five (5) years’ experience with an Associate’s Degree.
- A First Class Stationary Engineer’s license from the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety.
- Thorough understanding of generating plant operations and maintenance, including gas turbines, steam turbines, HRSGs, boilers, and boiler water treatment processes.
- Strong knowledge of plant engineering and maintenance functions.
- Experience with coordinating electric generation and fuel supply with vendors and Local Distribution Companies.
- Experience with budgeting and reporting practices.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and direct various programs and tasks.
- Strong oral and written communication and computational skills.
- Ability to work with computers and software.
- Ability to work extended hours, including shifts, and respond to emergencies.
- Ability to obtain a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities Certified Operator, Grade 3-I License within the probationary period.
