Power Generation Senior Electrical Project Engineer

Power Generation operates and maintains PG&E's hydroelectric, fossil, solar generation and battery storage facilities, providing approximately 5,300 megawatts of generating capacity for our customers. About the role

This is a senior-level project engineer position responsible for leading engineering & design, project management, program management, and technical support to O&M staff for complex issues and multiple large capital and expense improvements to power generation and infrastructure facilities. Projects are generally multi-year, require significant risk management, and may include formal partnering agreements with outside firms. The role requires extensive knowledge of power generation or heavy industry, project management, contract management, and strong communication skills. This position provides leadership, coaching, and technical direction to technical employees and teams.

Responsibilities

• Leads and applies extensive knowledge in the design and/or project management efforts for multiple complex projects that can be discipline-specific, multi-discipline, or programmatic in nature.
• Develops and/or evolves standards and specifications.
• Provides leadership, coaching, technical direction, oversight, and quality control for assigned projects and technical work; mentors less experienced team members.
• Approves, leads, and/or performs extensive complex risk management and engineering analyses & studies of generation assets, including dynamic and static modeling of structural, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
• Leads the development and/or presentation of findings to internal and external organizations, including regulatory bodies, contractors, and outside vendors.
• Interprets, applies, and educates others in applicable industry standards and regulatory codes and regulations.
• Manages relationships with external stakeholders; develops regulatory and facility safety strategies; negotiates with regulatory agencies and third parties on complex project and facility safety issues, including water rights.
• Provides extensive knowledge and guidance in start-up testing, inspections, and condition assessment; supports complex and/or large project start-up tests and field inspections.
• Conducts meetings, prepares written technical and regulatory documents, and represents the company to government bodies.
• Develops and champions company-wide best practices.
• Makes presentations to PG&E Officers, various agencies, and the public as appropriate.
• Manages multiple complex issues and projects, resolving problems of complex scope with creative or non-standard approaches.
• Supports Supervising Engineers, Project Managers, and Principal Engineers in developing and implementing programmatic solutions, process improvements, regulatory relations, and contracting strategies.
• Directs project-related work and contract administration with contractors and vendors; interacts with regulatory agencies, industry associations, and internal stakeholders.

Requirements

• 4-year BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited curriculum in the U.S. or equivalent (required).
• Current and active California PE (Professional Engineer) license (required).
• Mastery of Associate and Journey level Project Engineer job duties.
• Minimum of eight years of cumulative experience in engineering, design, and construction, with at least five years in generation or heavy industry.

Qualifications

• MS Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or MBA (desired).
• PMI certification (desired).
• Demonstrated ability to lead the design of multiple medium to large-scale complex projects and resolve complex technical and/or contractual issues without supervision.
• Extensive knowledge of the generation industry, including design, construction, and operation of rotating machines, dams, water conveyance, and interpretation of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
• Technical leadership within licensed discipline and extensive calculation, modeling, and analysis capabilities.
• Extensive contracting knowledge, including contract negotiation and management.
• Knowledge of water rights and ability to apply them to PG&E’s operations (as applicable).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to present complex information to upper management and diverse audiences.
• Seasoned project management skills, including judgment and organizational savvy in adapting traditional techniques.
• Ability to build consensus on complex and controversial project and technical issues.
• Track record of ensuring high-quality work and overseeing less experienced team members.
• Experience integrating industry knowledge and best practices into business decisions.
• Understanding of PG&E’s financial and business policies and ability to incorporate them into daily activities.
• Ability to identify trends across multiple projects or years and initiate system-wide improvements.
• Commitment to professional development through industry associations, conferences, workshops, and mentoring less senior engineers.

Pay

A reasonable salary range for this role in California is $161,520 – $207,504. The actual salary will be based on skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
