About the role
The Power Engineer II supports electrical distribution, transmission, substation, protection and control, field testing, power system studies, and utility asset-condition reviews under the direction of a Lead Engineer or Professional Engineer. This role is suited for a self-motivated electrical engineer who can manage assigned work, perform engineering evaluations, collaborate with project teams, communicate effectively with clients, and produce accurate and well-supported engineering deliverables.
Responsibilities
- Serve as project engineer for multiple design, study, and engineering-review assignments under the direction of a Lead Engineer.
- Prepare engineering designs and equipment specifications for electrical distribution projects ranging from 480 V through 34.5 kV.
- Perform and document engineering calculations, including short-circuit, grounding and step-and-touch potential, battery sizing, and equipment thermal-rating calculations.
- Conduct power system studies, including equipment evaluation, protective-device coordination, arc-flash, load-flow, harmonic, and power-quality analyses.
- Prepare one-line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, grounding plans, conduit and raceway plans, control schematics, wiring diagrams, material lists, and related design documents.
- Support protection and control design, including development and review of relay settings.
- Support maintenance testing and electrical equipment inspections; evaluate inspection records, equipment data, maintenance history, and test results; and perform engineering and utility asset-condition assessments.
- Create and revise designs using AutoCAD or MicroStation.
- Develop scopes of work, conceptual designs, execution plans, equipment specifications, bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, vendors, utilities, and internal engineering disciplines to support integrated project delivery and independent engineering reviews.
- Support substation construction, startup, and equipment commissioning activities; identify gaps or inconsistencies in available technical information; and prepare clear calculations, information requests, reports, presentations, technical correspondence, and project documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- At least one year of progressive experience in electrical distribution design, power system studies, substation design, utility engineering, equipment assessment, or a closely related area.
- Experience applying electrical engineering principles to power-system design, analysis, or engineering evaluation.
- Working knowledge of applicable NETA, ANSI/IEEE, NFPA 70E, and National Electrical Code requirements.
- Ability to interpret technical and design criteria; review engineering records; and prepare equipment specifications, one-line diagrams, physical layouts, grounding plans, conduit plans, control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, research, and technical-writing skills, including the ability to evaluate technical information and clearly document findings.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate directly with clients, coworkers, and utility representatives.
- Ability to work independently within assigned responsibilities and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and vendors.
- Ability to manage priorities and deliver accurate work in a fast-paced project environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites as needed, generally less than 30 percent.
- Valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable for required project travel.
Qualifications
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
- Three or more years of progressive experience in electric utility engineering, electrical distribution systems, substation engineering, power system studies, equipment assessment, or related power engineering work.
- Experience with EPC project delivery, construction, startup, and commissioning for systems from 480 V through 35 kV.
- Experience with detailed physical design of air-insulated substations rated 35 kV and above.
- Experience with high-voltage substation EPC projects, power system studies, transmission systems, or utility asset-condition reviews.
- Experience in electric utility, industrial, and consulting engineering environments, including exposure to utility planning, asset management, owner’s-engineer services, or independent engineering reviews.
- Experience with large capacitor-bank installations, including series compensation, FACTS, or static VAR compensation.
- Knowledge of synchrophasors, power-system stability, and symmetrical components.
- Experience with SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, PSCAD, PSS/E, PS-CAPE, PSL-CAD, or comparable power-system modeling software.
