About the role
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer I to provide power electronics engineering support to NASA’s Glenn Research Center (GRC) Transformational Tools and Technologies' Alternative Propulsion Focus Area. This role develops next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies by innovating solutions for key hybrid electric propulsion sub-systems. The development strategy includes rapidly conducting analyses, designs, assemblies, integrations, ground test, and flight test cycles to evaluate novel solutions. A key goal is to create a rapid, novel system design methodology for next-generation hybrid propulsion by identifying and evaluating open-source software and artificial intelligence packages that accelerate design cycles from idea to hardware flight implementation.
Responsibilities
- Design and analyze power electronics and bi-directional DC/DC converters.
- Work with lithium chemistry battery packs, including charge and discharge cycle requirements.
- Use ECAD tools (KiCAD) for circuit design and PCB layout.
- Conduct experimental demonstrations on bi-directional DC/DC converter test beds with strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and systematic testing skills.
- Leverage AI tools to aid in the generation of technical designs and conduct research.
- Manage DC power buses, voltage regulation, and power flow.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in an electrical engineering program at an ABET-accredited institution.
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is required.
- Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Skills
- Understanding of power electronics and bi-directional DC/DC converters.
- Knowledge of lithium chemistry battery packs and their charge/discharge cycles.
- Proficiency with ECAD tools (e.g., KiCAD) for circuit design and PCB layout.
- Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and systematic testing skills.
- Familiarity with AI tools for technical design and research.
- Understanding of DC power buses, voltage regulation, and power flow management.
