Job Summary
The Powder Coat Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all operations within the abrasive blasting and powder coating departments, ensuring high-quality finishes on metal fabricated parts through efficient use of personnel, equipment, and materials. This role manages both manual and automated powder coating systems, enforces safety and quality standards, and drives continuous improvement in productivity, cost, and performance.
Responsibilities
- Supervise daily operations of the abrasive blasting, pre-treatment, and powder coating lines (manual and automated).
- Plan and assign work to meet production schedules and quality standards.
- Monitor coating thickness, color match, surface finish, and adhesion per specification and customer requirements.
- Cook up maintenance and troubleshooting of coating and blasting equipment to minimize downtime.
- Ensure proper surface preparation, masking, hanging, and curing processes.
- Manage powder inventory, usage rates, and waste reduction initiatives.
- Enforce all EHS (Environmental, Health & Safety) regulations, including PPE and ventilation system compliance.
- Train and evaluate team members on process techniques, equipment use, and safety procedures.
- Collaborate with quality, engineering, and production teams to resolve finishing defects and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain documentation related to work orders, quality checks, and process control data.
- Drive continuous improvement—optimize line efficiency, reduce rework, improve first-pass yield.
Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of automated powder coating equipment, electrostatic application, curing ovens, and pre-treatment chemistry.
- Understanding of abrasive blasting techniques, media types, and surface preparation standards (e.g., SSPC, NACE).
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for application and recovery systems.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and 5S practices.
- Proven ability to lead and develop a production team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and quality standards related to coatings.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent Certification
- 3–5 years of experience in powder coating or industrial finishing; supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Safety Requirements & Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Work in environments with exposure to noise, heat, dust, and coating materials (with appropriate PPE).
