Postdoctoral Researcher (Chemistry)
Amherst College invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term (2-year) Post-Doctoral Research Assistant position in the Marcus lab (MLab). The position has a flexible start date as early as January 1, 2027, and may be renewed beyond the initial 24-month term.
About the Role
The Post-Doctoral Research Assistant will execute and publish independent research, collaborate with Amherst College undergraduates on thesis projects, and train new undergraduate researchers. The MLab focuses on the biophysical and biochemical consequences of protein evolution, specializing in p-loop NTPase mechanisms. Research combines wet lab and computational approaches to study protein-protein interaction selectivity, allosteric regulation, and the intersection of generative AI with evolutionary patterns.
Responsibilities
- Conduct lab-based biochemical and biophysical research tailored to the candidate’s expertise and interests.
- Analyze data using modern computational tools, including bioinformatic pipelines and Python-based packages.
- Perform literature reviews and contribute to writing research articles and grant proposals.
- Mentor and train undergraduate researchers with varying levels of experience.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized lab environment.
Requirements
- PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field.
- At least three years of supervised biochemical research experience.
- Demonstrated interest in independent research.
- Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate and support undergraduate students in a research setting.
- Successful completion of reference checks, background checks, and a criminal offender records information (CORI) check.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with experience in at least two of the following techniques are preferred:
- Molecular cloning at large scale and plasmid design.
- E. coli-based reporter assays.
- Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) sample preparation and data analysis.
- Protein purification via FPLC.
- Enzymatic and biophysical assays (e.g., kinetic assays, ITC).
- Computational tools, such as molecular dynamics and machine learning (e.g., AlphaFold, ESMFold).
Pay
The expected salary range for this position is $63,000 – $65,000 per year, with variations based on education, training, experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory factors.
