Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neutron Scattering

Brookhaven National Laboratory · Upton, NY · 3 days ago

About the role

The Neutron Scattering Group—including John Tranquada, Jennifer Sears, and Igor Zaliznyak—invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to collaborate on studies of spin, charge, and lattice correlations in quantum materials. The research program spans unconventional superconductors, topological materials, van der Waals materials, and frustrated magnets, with inelastic neutron scattering experiments conducted at national user facilities such as the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Crystals are grown in-house or obtained through collaboration, and the work is pursued in close coordination with colleagues in crystal growth, bulk and transport measurements, x-ray scattering, and condensed matter theory.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform neutron scattering experiments, including developing ideas, data collection, and analysis.
  • Write proposals for experimental beam time.
  • Conduct experiments at remote user facilities.
  • Analyze neutron scattering data and communicate results through scientific publications and conference talks.
  • Collaborate with the Neutron Scattering group and the broader Condensed Matter Physics & Materials Science Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
  • Opportunities may exist for crystal growth.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in condensed-matter physics.
  • Proficiency in programming for data analysis (Python, IDL, MATLAB, or suitable alternative).
  • Demonstrated commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with scattering and spectroscopy-based techniques.
  • Experience studying structure and excitations in quantum materials.
  • Knowledge of magnetism, lattice dynamics, and correlated-electron physics.

Work location and travel

Work will be conducted on-site at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. Travel is required for experiments at national user facilities such as the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Appointment terms

Eligible candidates may not exceed a combined total of five years of relevant postdoctoral and/or R&D experience, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness, or other life-changing events. The appointment is initially for two years, with the possibility of extension and career growth contingent on performance and funding.

Compensation

The full salary range for this position is $75,000 – $81,000 per year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications, education, and experience.
