Postdoctoral Research Associate - Grid Modeling
About the role
The Grid Transients & Advanced Modeling Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division (EEID) within the Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to perform R&D in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation, software development, dynamic and transient inverter modeling, and related applications. The group supports the energy reliability and prosperity mission of the Department of Energy (DOE) through transformative science and technology solutions, including research for the Office of Electricity (OE), Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response (CESER), and Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation (CMEI). Focus areas include advanced grid modeling using high-performance computing (e.g., quantum computing), EMT simulations, and power electronics control.
Responsibilities
- Develop electromagnetic transient (EMT) models for transmission or distribution grids, synchronous generators, large loads, and transmission networks.
- Develop simulation algorithms that enable large-scale simulations.
- Integrate or co-simulate grid component/device models into open-source software tools for system dynamic and transient simulations.
- Implement post-processing measures for simulations to support automation.
- Align work with ORNL’s core values: Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.
- Promote a respectful workplace that fosters equal opportunity.
Requirements
- A Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a related discipline, completed within the last five years.
- Expertise in power systems and power electronics.
- Experience with C/C++, Matlab, and Python programming.
- Experience with power systems software such as PSCAD or PSS/e.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card, requiring a favorable post-employment background investigation, including a declaration of illegal drug activities (including marijuana, regardless of state laws).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with software development.
- Experience with GPUs, multi-core CPUs, or advanced computing (e.g., quantum processing units).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment, managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
Applicants must not have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the application date and must complete all degree requirements before starting the appointment. The initial appointment is up to 24 months, with potential for extension based on performance and funding availability. Three letters of recommendation are required.
