Postdoctoral Research Associate - Electric Power System
About the role
The Interdisciplinary Science (IS) Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a one-year appointment with an opportunity for a one-year renewal to perform research in the area of electric power grids.
Responsibilities
- Perform cyber-physical system modeling and simulation for the power grid.
- Perform research on power system dynamics and control under high inverter-based resources (IBRs).
- Develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) techniques for power system planning, operation, control, and cybersecurity.
Requirements
- A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Math, or other related fields with a broad knowledge of electric power systems.
- Experience with cyber-power system modeling, simulation, dynamics, and Python and/or MATLAB programming.
- A strong background in AI/ML applications in the power grid.
- Good written and oral communication skills, willingness to take direction, and ability to work with others as part of a project team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cybersecurity of energy systems and commonly used tools such as OPAL-RT/RTDS, PSS/E, PSCAD, EXata.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity of industrial control systems and/or quantum computing.
Additional Information
Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment. BNL policy requires that after obtaining a Ph.D., eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
The full salary range for this position is $70,200 – $85,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
