Postdoctoral Position in Pulsar Related Astronomy and Astrophysics
About the role
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), managed by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to focus on studies of neutron stars, pulsars, and fast radio bursts.
Responsibilities
- Develop and carry out an innovative research program in one or more of the following areas: searching for pulsars in the Galactic Center region of the Milky Way galaxy, precision multi-frequency timing of pulsars, using pulsars for testing fundamental physics, and multi-wavelength observations of fast radio bursts (FRBs) and magnetars.
- Conduct research on a variety of telescopes across different wavelengths, including ground-based instruments like the Deep Space Network (DSN) and the Green Bank Telescope, as well as space-based instruments like the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) mission and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi).
- Focus on developing innovative techniques to search for pulsars in compact binary orbits, subsequent precision timing of such objects, and investigations that utilize DSN observations complementary to NASA missions, such as NICER, FERMI, and LISA missions.
Requirements
- A Doctoral Degree.
Qualifications
Of particular interest are science investigations that are focused on development of innovative techniques to search for pulsars in compact binary orbits, subsequent precision timing of such objects, and/or investigations that make use of the DSN observations that are complementary to NASA missions, such as NICER, FERMI, and LISA missions.
Skills
Strong background in astrophysics, expertise in pulsar astronomy, and experience with multi-wavelength observations of fast radio bursts (FRBs) and magnetars.
Benefits
NASA Postdoctoral Program offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists engaging in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. Fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Pay
Salary is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
One- to three-year fellowship.
Benefits
Fellowship includes health insurance, retirement plan, and relocation assistance.
