Postdoctoral Fellow - Pharmacology

HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to initiate and carry out research projects in collaboration with a research team in The Nugent Lab, Pharmacology Department. The lab investigates the neural circuit mechanisms underlying mood disorders using mouse models of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This role offers an opportunity to lead cutting-edge experiments, contribute to project design, and mentor junior lab members while maintaining high-level research standards.

About the role

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine, serving military, medical, academic, and government clients.

Responsibilities

  • Design and perform complex behavioral assays, ex vivo slice electrophysiology, in vivo fiber photometry recordings, optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulations, and advanced microscopy/imaging.
  • Conduct thorough literature reviews, collaborate on experimental design, analyze complex datasets, and lead the writing of manuscripts, grant proposals, and scientific presentations for national/international conferences.
  • Perform specialized bio-laboratory procedures, including biochemistry protocols, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and RNAscope.
  • Share responsibility for laboratory maintenance, including inventory tracking, reagent acquisition, preventive equipment maintenance/calibration, protocol optimization, and quality control.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Physiology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 0-5 years of experience.
  • Experience with—or a strong aptitude to rapidly learn—slice electrophysiology, fiber photometry, optogenetics/chemogenetics, and stereotaxic surgery in rodents.
  • Prior neuroscience research experience is highly advantageous.
  • Strong intellectual independence, excellent troubleshooting abilities, exceptional written/verbal communication skills, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Pay

The annual salary range for this position is $52,800–$63,000, determined based on experience and education.
