Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Xiaolei Tang’s laboratory at Long Island University is seeking highly motivated and qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellow position focused on the study of regulatory T cells in autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. The fellow will conduct research using animal models and human samples, gaining both basic research and industry experience. The position is based in the newly established Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine, with access to a fully equipped, state-of-the-art laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Cell Culture: Maintain primary cells and cell lines; perform assays for proliferation, cytokine secretion, apoptosis, and differentiation.
• Flow Cytometry: Conduct cell subset and cycle analyses using flow cytometers.
• Molecular Biology: Isolate DNA/RNA; perform agarose gel electrophoresis, cloning, PCR, real-time RT-qPCR, ChIP, ChIPSeq, gene knockdown, and overexpression.
• Biochemistry: Isolate and quantify proteins; perform SDS-PAGE, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, and in vitro/in vivo biochemical assays.
• Immunohistochemistry: Prepare paraffin-embedded and cryosections; perform histology, H&E staining, and immunohistochemistry staining.
• Microscopy: Analyze images using bright field, fluorescence, and confocal microscopes.
• Spectroscopy: Use UV-Vis spectroscopy and spectrophotometry to quantify DNA, RNA, and protein.
• Bioinformatics: Design primers, perform sequence alignment, bulk RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, and analyze gene sequencing data using machine-learning techniques.
• Small Animal Handling: Breed and maintain mouse colonies; genotype knockout/transgenic models; perform procedures such as injections, necropsy, tissue collection, and luciferase imaging.
• Mentoring: Guide undergraduate, DVM, Master’s, and PhD students.
• Publishing: Gather and interpret data; prepare reports and manuscripts.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in natural science or a health-related field from an accredited institution.
• Background in immunology training (preferred).
• One year of related experience.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to work on multiple projects.
• Strong collaboration skills with laboratory members, faculty, staff, and administrators.
• Ability to independently carry out significant research projects.
• Solid and consistent publication record in tissue repair and/or immunology.
