Postdoctoral Associate in Astrobiology

About the Role

This postdoctoral position involves conducting research on the biosignature preservation potential of Ocean World ices exposed to space-like conditions, including temperature, pressure, and radiation. The role includes contributing to experiments using the Europa Tower (Stone Aerospace Facility) to simulate cryogenic temperatures, hard vacuum, and radiation exposure on ice samples doped with biogenic materials.

Experiments will focus on two scenarios: (i) mixing and freezing candidate biosignatures to simulate accreted sub-surface ices transported to the near subsurface, and (ii) flash freezing ices by depositing microdroplets into vacuum to simulate geyser-derived materials. The postdoctoral associate will perform measurements using GC-MS, analyze data, prepare manuscripts, and present results at conferences. Responsibilities

• Perform or supervise research on assigned projects, coordinating activities and reporting progress.
• Write articles for publication and present research findings to applicable parties.
• Compile data for funding proposals and assist with writing proposals.
• Train and mentor subordinate research associates and undergraduate students.
• Conduct experiments using the Europa Tower to simulate space-like conditions on ice samples.
• Analyze experimental products using GC-MS and interpret results.

Requirements

• PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geological Sciences, or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with mass spectrometry.
• Experience in wet chemistry laboratories.
