About the role

The Radiation and Fusion Target Design department at Sandia National Laboratories has an opening for a postdoctoral physicist focusing on the design of imploding targets for the Z machine. The primary focus will be on designing multi-layer Magneto-Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) targets under tailored current drive conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Partner on the design and analysis of experimental campaigns at Z.
  • Develop and apply multi-physics modeling tools to design and assess target concepts for Z experiments.
  • Represent the research and development in the organization through publications in scientific journals and presentations at conferences.
  • Collaborate as part of an integrated team to plan and execute research on magnetically driven inertial confinement fusion targets.
  • Work independently to design experiments and analyze simulation and diagnostic results.
  • Develop new understanding of layered target performance through computational modeling and comparison with experimental data.
  • Publish findings and engage with the broader scientific community.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Astronomy, or a related discipline conferred within the last five years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.

Qualifications

  • Experience in the use of theory or computational tools to probe the nature of fusion-relevant plasmas.
  • A technical competency in the development of high energy density experiments, demonstrated through publications in refereed journals.
  • Excellent communication skills demonstrated through presentations at professional scientific conferences.

Skills

  • Strong proficiency in multi-physics modeling tools.
  • Experience with high energy density experiments.
  • Effective collaboration and teamwork skills.

Benefits

  • Flexible work arrangements including compressed workweeks, part-time work, and telecommuting options.
  • Generous vacation, strong medical and other benefits, competitive 401k, learning opportunities, relocation assistance, and amenities aimed at creating a solid work/life balance.
