Argonne National Laboratory · Lemont, IL · 3 wk ago
Analyst$73k–$121k/yrFull-time

About the role

The overarching focus of the postdoc position is on advancing the understanding of materials under high pressure-temperature conditions, particularly across the solid-melt transition and melt-liquid structure. With the completion of the APS-Upgrade project and the investment in new high coherence and brightness x-ray beams at HPCAT, the selected postdoc will have opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge scientific research and the growth of HPCAT.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously push the boundaries of high pressure-temperature measurements using advanced x-ray platforms.
  • Optimize the application of APS-Upgraded high brightness and high coherence beam across APS and at HPCAT.
  • Implement and develop techniques including BCDI, XPCS, nano-beam and time resolved microscopy, PDF, 3D imaging, PCI, and other advanced characterization methods for materials science.
  • Expand the capability to study materials such as transition metals, high entropy alloys, advanced manufactured materials, superconductors, and other materials proposed by the candidate.
  • Contribute to the long-term vision and growth of HPCAT through scientific advancements and collaborations with staff, partners, and other institutions.
  • Develop and implement AI/ML applications to support and enhance research efforts.

Requirements

  • Significant background in high pressure platforms and/or x-ray measurements is preferred, but not mandatory.
  • A recent or soon-to-be completed PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Geosciences, or Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience with synchrotron x-ray techniques such as BCDI, XPCS, PCI, nano-beam and time resolved diffraction microscopy.
  • Able to implement various AI/ML applications.

Qualifications

  • Recent or soon-to-be completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years).
  • Experience with high-pressure research is not required but will be beneficial.

Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of high-pressure experimental techniques.
  • Experience with synchrotron x-ray techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Benefits

Comprehensive benefits are part of the total rewards package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.

Pay
