PostDoc TomoWISE (PA2026/2013)
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 46,000 students and 8,500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
About the role
MAX IV is building TomoWISE, a new tomography beamline dedicated to advancing materials science for sustainability. To complete this project, we are forming a specialised team to develop the beamline into a fully operational facility. As part of this team, which includes a Beamline Lead Scientist, a Research Engineer, and a Data Scientist, you will collaborate closely with experts across the Technical and Science divisions to plan, install, and commission advanced infrastructure and equipment. You will contribute to developing and maintaining tomographic imaging methodologies and supporting future beamline users.
The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to participate and contribute to the construction of a new beamline and be part of its initial scientific program, with the possibility of early commissioning of the large beam option in 2028. Alongside contributing to the beamline project, the candidate is expected to carry out an independent research project, preferably within collaborations with present and future users of MAX IV.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the installation and commissioning of beamline instrumentation, including optics, sample stages, and detectors.
- Contribute to the implementation of relevant software for tomographic reconstruction and image analysis, in collaboration with the beamline team and other internal resources.
- Drive your own research program, within national and international collaborations, focused on materials for sustainability.
- Present and publish your research results internally and in conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journals.
- Engage with the MAX IV user community and contribute to the outreach of the team.
Requirements
- PhD in a STEM field.
- Experience in materials science research, or in tomography method development, with a genuine scientific interest in a materials science domain (e.g., structural materials, energy materials, geology, functional materials for sustainability).
- Experience with experimental research, with a focus on microscopy and imaging, preferably using X-rays. This includes hands-on work with instrumentation, commissioning, and data acquisition/analysis.
- Proven ability to develop research projects from proposal to publication, with a collaborative approach.
- Experience presenting at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
- Fluency in English – spoken and written.
Qualifications
The following are seen as merits:
- Experience and ability to prioritize and communicate efficiently in a fast-paced environment of a large-scale user facility.
- Hands-on approach with a dedication to experimental work.
- Experience working in large collaborative teams.
- Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with internal and external partners.
- Background in scientific programming is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with AI/ML-based approaches for image reconstruction, segmentation, or quantitative data analysis.
About you
As a person, you are curious, self-driven, flexible, communicative, and dedicated to teamwork. You have a proven ability to handle complex system integration and to coordinate effectively with support groups, working as part of a multidisciplinary team where contributions from technical and scientific staff across divisions are essential to progress.
Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances, the PhD can have been completed earlier than the aforementioned three years.
Schedule
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment for a period of at least two years and at most three years, in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01”).
Benefits
When you join our MAX IV team, you enter a world of cutting-edge science. We offer a multicultural work environment with great opportunities for personal development and a healthy work-life balance.
MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research infrastructure hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden and abroad with intense X-rays and state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Its 16 beamlines receive up to 2,000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using brilliant X-rays.
