About the role

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Leonardo dos Santos and Dr. Joshua Lothringer on observational studies of atmospheres of hot, gas-giant exoplanets, specifically the properties of their upper atmospheres and a detailed study of the lower atmosphere of the hottest known exoplanet. This research will include analysis and interpretation of UV observations with the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and near-IR observations with the NIRISS instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Responsibilities

  • Analysis and interpretation of UV observations with the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
  • Data reduction and instrumental systematics of space-based observations
  • Exoplanet transits, eclipses and/or phase curves
  • Atmospheric escape
  • Participation in related projects and engagement with other groups

Requirements

  • Holding a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: UV/near-IR spectroscopy, data reduction and instrumental systematics of space-based observations, exoplanet transits, eclipses and/or phase curves, atmospheric escape

Pay

Salary range: $74,000 - $85,000

Schedule

Nominal start date is flexible, but can start as early as October 2026. Initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal to a 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
