About the role
The Dr. Anne Piantadosi’s laboratory at the Emory University School of Medicine seeks a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in computational biology to study viral genomics and metagenomics.
Responsibilities
- Lead computational projects investigating population-level virus evolution, within-host virus evolution, and/or metagenomics/virome studies.
- Contribute to the professional development of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Work closely with research associates in the wet lab to ensure projects proceed smoothly.
Requirements
- A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc).
- Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
Qualifications
- PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, evolutionary biology, virology or related.
- Background in phylogenetics and/or metagenomics.
- Track record of outstanding written and verbal communication.
- Superior organizational skills.
- Experience working with massively parallel sequencing data.
- Experience working on cloud platforms.
- Proficiency with command-line Linux/UNIX systems.
- Use of basic software engineering practices such as version control.
- A history of, or interest in, contributing to open-source software.
- Experience with wet lab sequencing methods is beneficial.
Skills
- Strong programming skills in Python/R/Perl/Java/C++.
- Experience with bioinformatics tools like FastQC, Trimmomatic, Bowtie, SAMtools, GATK, etc.
- Knowledge of phylogenetic analysis software (e.g., RAxML, MrBayes, BEAST).
- Experience with metagenomic analysis tools (e.g., Kraken, MetaPhlAn, QIIME).
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud).
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
Benefits
This is a one-year position, with potential for extension depending on funding. There is the opportunity to work remotely.
Pay
Salary is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
The position requires in-person attendance at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion.
