Andrew Broadbent, DVM, PhD, in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, is recruiting a postdoctoral research associate to join his lab, which focuses on avian viruses. The role centers on developing novel vaccines to protect chickens from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

Responsibilities

  • Manage independent research projects to deliver high-impact results.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Contribute to the development of new techniques and methods.
  • Manage projects to time and budget.
  • Participate in team meetings and discussions.
  • Present research data internally and externally at conferences.
  • Publish high-impact research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Supervise students.

Requirements

  • PhD in virology, immunology, or a related field (or equivalent degree, e.g., MD, DVM).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ laboratory experience.
  • Proven track record of first-author publications or pre-prints in virology, immunology, or a related field.

Physical Demands

  • Lift and move moderately weighted goods (20–50 lbs., e.g., centrifuge rotors) up to 25 feet.
  • Operate tissue culture cells or zebrafish tanks.
  • Handle hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes, and compressed gases.
  • Frequent maneuvering, handling, or feeling of objects, tools, or instrument controls.
  • Prolonged standing, including stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling to access tools and equipment.
  • Regular computer operation.
  • Adjust and operate lab equipment from diverse angles of perception.
  • Work in fluctuating temperatures, including spaces up to 83°F for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in virology.
  • Experience with in vivo animal studies of infection and immunity.
  • Experience in an animal biosafety level 3 (ABSL3) laboratory.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong networking skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Ability to plan and execute work independently.

Pay

$60,000 – $65,000 per year.
