Position Details: Operator I

Essential Duties

• Assists in the maintenance and construction of road and drainage projects using hand-held equipment
• Operate vehicles and equipment as directed, including tractor-trailer, oil distributer, chip spreader, sweeper, roller, brush chipper, mower, dump truck, front-end loader, A-boom, pot-patcher, culvert cleaner, Backhoe and front-end loader
• Supervise other employees as needed to complete assigned tasks
• Understand construction methods and operations to complete tasks safely
• Aid in traffic control for road and drainage projects
• Assist with clean-up of project sites, Road & Bridge facilities, equipment, machinery and vehicles
• Maintain equipment, machinery and vehicles
• Attend departmental meetings and technical/safety training
• Train other employees in proper operation of equipment, maintenance, safety procedures and county policies

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Frequent lifting of up to 30 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, and rare lifting of more than 50 pounds
• Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, and sitting for prolonged periods
• Frequent operating of motor vehicles and road construction equipment
• Frequent on-call availability and overtime work, if necessary
• Exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes
• Exposure to hazards such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and fires
• Exposure to smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils
• Exposure to noise levels occasionally loud
• Exposure to working near moving mechanical parts
• Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals
