About the role

The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing patient care and support within the ambulatory setting. This position accurately completes patient interviews, collects appropriate specimens, assists the physician with patient exams, maintains departmental inventory, provides patient education, and ensures quality direct patient care and non-professional services as directed by the Physician.

Responsibilities include performing phlebotomy for diagnostic studies, CLIA waived testing, EKGs, and drug and alcohol testing. This position supports organizational goals through quality customer service, performance improvement efforts, and teamwork.

As part of the Virtualist Program, this position collects patient intakes remotely and assists in telehealth visits as directed by the physician. Note that this role does not involve hands-on patient exams, procedures, specimen collection, or phlebotomy for diagnostic studies under the Virtualist Program. BLS certification is excluded for this program.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient interviews and collect specimens.
  • Assist physicians with patient exams and provide patient education.
  • Maintain departmental inventory and ensure quality patient care.
  • Perform phlebotomy for diagnostic studies and CLIA waived testing.
  • Conduct EKGs and drug and alcohol testing as required.
  • Support telehealth visits and remote patient intakes (Virtualist Program).
  • Demonstrate competencies as outlined in the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program required.
  • Must be a graduate of a post-secondary Medical Assistance program accredited by a national accrediting agency, with a minimum of 330 hours of instruction, including special training in medication administration as per the NJ Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Certification in Phlebotomy (ASCP) preferred.
  • BLS-HCP certification required within six months of hire or transfer (excluded for Virtualist Program).
  • Active National Certification with an approved certifying agency (e.g., AAMA, NCCT, NHA, AMT, BME) required for Certified Medical Assistants.

Experience

  • 1-3 years of prior experience in ambulatory care preferred.
  • Able to handle a high volume of interactions with frequent interruptions.
  • Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at hire; training provided with required competency within 30-60 days.

Work Environment

  • Potential exposure to medical office hazards, bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
  • Requires considerable reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Frequent telephone work and lifting of 25-50 lbs; occasional lifting of 50-100 lbs.
  • Periodic travel to other department locations may be required.
