Pool Guard Trainee (SR-11)

SHIFT MAY VARY, MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ALL SHIFTS, INCLUDING: NIGHTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.
Responsibilities
- Attends training sessions and participates in informal discussions, on-the-job training, practice drills and demonstrations concerning lifeguarding and first aid procedures and techniques.
- Familiarizes self with departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Provides information and assistance to the general public.
- Maintains the pool and surrounding pool area.
- Under immediate supervision, performs limited lifeguarding duties.
Requirements
- Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).
- Possession of a current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training or Lifeguarding Certificate;
- A current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certificate or ARC Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certificate;
- A current ARC Water Safety Instructor Certificate;
- Completion of the Emergency Medical Responder course.
Qualifications
- Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn and apply lifeguarding and first aid methods and techniques; learn the operation and maintenance of the various pool equipment; act quickly and effectively in emergency situations; swim and learn water rescue techniques; read and understand rules and regulations; work effectively with others; deal tactfully and professionally with the public.
Skills
Skills Assessment Applicants are required to complete a performance exam. To participate in the performance exam, you must sign a waiver verifying that you are physically and mentally fit to participate in the 300 meter swim.
Benefits
The above recruitment is being administered on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
Pay
Serves in a trainee capacity, receiving on-and-off-the job training to learn the theories, techniques and methods used in lifeguarding; maintains pool and pool area; performs lifeguard duties under immediate supervision; and performs other related duties as required.
Schedule
Appointment may be made at any rate within the salary range from SR-11C ($3,606) to SR-11E ($3,900) per month.
