About the role

The Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) plays a crucial role in shaping law enforcement across California. POST establishes professional standards, provides training resources, and supports officers and dispatchers throughout their careers.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a comprehensive training program at a POST approved Police Academy.
  • Undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph, psychological examination, and fingerprint clearance.
  • Meet medical standards recommended by POST.
  • Pass the PELLETB test or NTN score if required.
  • Complete physical, psychological, and medical examinations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.
  • Age: 20 years and 6 months at time of appointment.
  • Valid California Class "C" driver's license.
  • Medical standards as per POST.
  • Eligible for U.S. citizenship or permanent resident alien status.

  • Knowledge of law enforcement theory, principles, and practices.
  • Ability to observe, remember, and think quickly in emergencies.
  • Ability to learn standard operating procedures and respond to various situations.
  • Ability to understand and interpret laws and regulations.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to perform self-defense techniques and handle firearms safely.
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain professionalism.

Benefits

  • Temporary hourly pay ($31.80/hour) with medical, vision, and dental benefits.
  • After completing the Police Academy, annual salary of $115,608 - $140,532 plus additional benefits.

Pay

  • Trainee salary: $31.80/hour.
  • Probationary Police Officer salary: $115,608 - $140,532 annually.

Schedule

  • Temporary class for approximately 5 months.
  • Training program at a POST approved Police Academy.
  • May extend beyond the academy period with Chief of Police authorization.
