About the role
The Police Sergeant position involves working as a first-line supervisor, performing law enforcement and specialized tasks, and providing leadership to other officers. The role includes making work assignments, monitoring activities, and training and assisting subordinates.
Responsibilities
- Make work assignments and monitor activities
- Develop, implement, and enforce policies, procedures, and regulations
- Provide on-the-job training and evaluation to assigned staff
- Assume command in the absence of the superior officer and assist in administrative duties
- Participate in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures
- Lead investigations and special projects
Requirements
- Comprehensive knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures
- Effective communication skills, including report writing
- Ability to work independently and make sound judgments
- Ability to supervise and evaluate employees
- Ability to assist in developing department policies and procedures
- High school diploma or equivalent, and completion of a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy
- Three or more years of active law enforcement experience
- Completion of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment
- Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field (Criminal Justice) is preferred
- Experience supervising and/or providing lead work direction to staff
- Knowledge of local jurisdictions and laws
- Knowledge of emergency response procedures, principles, and techniques
- Knowledge of current policing trends
- Ability to prepare thorough and accurate written reports
- Ability to act calmly and effectively under adverse conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
- Ability to handle and communicate sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality
- Ability to collaborate with police organizations from other CSU’s and state/federal law enforcement organizations
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse community
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines

- Comprehensive knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures
- Comprehensive knowledge of current criminal codes and laws
- Comprehensive knowledge of effective investigative techniques and procedures

Pay
Salary range: $10,453 per month (Step 18) - $10,941 per month (Step 20)
Schedule
Varies; irregular shifts, to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to work any shift in a 24/7 schedule.
