About the role
The Norfolk Police Department offers a comprehensive training program leading to certification as a Virginia state police officer. The academy trains recruits in various aspects including classroom instruction, physical fitness, and police scenario simulations.
Responsibilities
- Attend and complete the state-certified Basic Recruit Training course.
- Perform limited, non-hazardous police functions.
- Conduct covert investigations to gather intelligence and support arrests and prosecutions.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- U.S. citizenship (born or naturalized).
- Valid Driver's License.
- No convictions for drunk driving/driving under the influence within the past three years.
- No more than ten (10) demerit points on DMV record.
- No suspension of driver's license within the past 12 months due to moving violations.
- No dishonorable discharge from military service.
- No felony or misdemeanor convictions.
- No use of controlled substances within specified time frames.
- Ability to work varied schedules, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and inclement weather.
Qualifications
Recruits must be at least 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of application and must successfully complete the entry-level testing and assessments.
Skills
Strong communication skills, physical fitness, and the ability to handle stress are essential.
Benefits
Upon graduation, recruits receive a career progression to Police Officer and an increase in salary to $61,200. Benefits include employer-paid pension plan, life insurance, medical/dental coverage, and tuition assistance.
Pay
$61,200 annually upon graduation.
Schedule
Variated work schedule, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and periods of inclement weather.
