About the role

The Police Officer position is responsible for maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and safeguarding all Authority employees, customers, property, and assets. This position is potentially hazardous and dangerous.

Responsibilities

• Enforce both Pennsylvania and New Jersey motor vehicles, civil, criminal, local, state, federal and Authority policies, laws, ordinances, regulations, and guidelines.
• Patrol Authority property on foot or in a vehicle.
• Engage citizens for a lawful purpose, or to render assistance.
• Investigate and clear motor vehicle accidents from Authority property.
• Ensure removal of roadway debris, or obstacles.
• Engage in hazardous activities such as climbing bridges or tower structures to retrieve and secure potential suicide victims.
• Engage in a variety of miscellaneous assignments and unexpected emergencies as they arise.
• Strive to avoid engaging in negligent actions or conduct, which may cause criminal or civil liability, on behalf of the Authority.
• Effect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense.
• Prepare investigative and additional reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
• Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
• Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting a law enforcement patrol vehicle.

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be between 21 and 37 years old at the time of hire.
• Must have a valid driver’s license in the state of residence.
• Must pass a written examination.
• Must pass a neuro-psychiatric/psychological examination.
• Must pass a medical examination which includes drug (including marijuana) and alcohol tests.
• Must pass a stringent background investigation.

• Walk, stoop, crawl, climb stairs, steps, and ladders, etc. while carrying weighted objects.

• Pass a periodic medical examination and the Fitness Indicator Test (FIT), which includes strength, flexibility, conditioning, and stamina testing.
• Normal day and nighttime vision, corrected or uncorrected, lack of color blindness, and normal hearing, corrected or uncorrected.
• Ability to withstand heights of over 200 feet.
• Climb up and down transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet and lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same.
• Able to perform all position functions.
• Able to physically operate all job-related equipment to position functions.

Working Conditions

• Work both indoors and outdoors in all types of lighting and weather conditions including but not limited to, heat, sun, rain, electrical storms, snow, ice, fire, smoke, and other unspecified hazards.
• Organized, work well under pressure, and be able to prioritize assignments appropriately.
• Communicate well with the public and remain poised under pressure.
• Understand the importance of discretion and adhering to deadlines.
• Typically, the duties and responsibilities of this position are performed accordingly, in an office environment and outdoors.
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions and in variable controlled hazardous materials exposures.
• Assigned to a shift at either one of the four DRPA bridges or at the PATCO facility.
• Rotating shifts on a rotating basis, including holidays and overtime as necessary.

Benefits

The selected candidate will be eligible for a $10,000 signing bonus hire under the following conditions: The selected candidate must pass all background checks (including any and all medical/drug, psychological testing and criminal background). The initial $5,000 of the $10,000 signing bonus (taxable and all regular payroll taxes will be withheld) to be paid within one month from the date of hire; The remaining $5,000 of the $10,000 signing bonus (taxable and all regular payroll taxes will be withheld) to be paid upon the successful completion of one year of employment at the DRPA. The selected candidate must successfully complete the police academy training. If the candidate does not successfully complete the police academy training, any signing bonus paid must be repaid to the DRPA and will not be eligible for the final $5,000 payment. The candidate must remain employed with the DRPA for three years from the completion of the required police academy training, otherwise, the entire $10,000 signing bonus must be repaid to the DRPA at the time of separation. In addition, if the selected candidate does not remain employed with the DRPA for three years from the completion of the required police academy training, the selected candidate must repay costs incurred by the DRPA for the candidate's attendance at the police academy.
