Summary Of Duties
Performs general police duties, processes, and operations for the protection of life and property and enforces federal, state, and local laws, prevents crime, and preserves peace in a railroad surface transportation environment.
Compensation And Benefits
- Annual: 1 full year of prior service at probationary rate or over 1 year break in service - $92,928
5 Year Lateral (First Year at 95%) with less than 1 year of break in service from previous Department - $109,563.50

Essential Functions
- Safeguard the safety and protection of all persons, including passengers, employees, and property.
- Perform patrol duties on foot and in a police vehicle for prolonged periods of time.
- Perform security and safety activities at incidents, including, but not limited to, derailments, floods, fires, hazardous material incidents, special trains, and company functions involving railroad property and responsibility.
- Respond to calls for service and assistance, identify hazards, and take proactive steps to resolve problems.
- Arrest and detain offenders, conduct thorough preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes and reduce criminal opportunities, conduct searches and seizures, and serve warrants.
- Effectively deal with individuals under various circumstances to resolve disputes and neutralize hostilities, mediate disputes; assist individuals who are sick and need assistance, administer first aid when necessary.
- Maintain proficiency and safely operate police equipment, including vehicles, computers, and weapons, including a firearm.
- Communicate verbally in person and by radio; present testimony and evidence in administrative, civil, and criminal proceedings; maintain open line of communication with law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, internal and external partners, as necessary or when directed.
- Record information and prepare a variety of detailed reports with clearly organized thoughts and conclusions.
- Read, interpret, and apply federal, state, and local laws and regulations, railroad and department policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Seeking laterals and recently retired law enforcement professionals.
- Must possess a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate upon appointment.
- Minimum of one-year experience as a full-time, sworn patrol officer with a California police or sheriff’s department, and have passed a patrol field training program and probationary period.
- Attach current California Basic Certificate with resume.
- Active and recently retired California Police Officers are encouraged to apply.
- Must be a United States citizen or meet the immigration requirements in the state where they will hold a railroad police commission.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment.
- Must be able to pass all components of the police application process, including: a physical agility test, an interview, a psychological examination and an in-depth background investigation and a job-related physical examination.
- Able to obtain a railroad police commission from the State of California.
Communication And Interpersonal Skills
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
