Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Patrols City streets, neighborhoods, and business districts by foot and vehicle to enforce laws and deter criminal activity.
- Responds to dispatched calls for service and emergency situations.
- Investigates criminal activity, gathers evidence, and arrests suspects when appropriate.
- Investigates traffic accidents, determines probable cause, and prepares reports.
- Directs traffic and enforces traffic laws.
- Prepares detailed reports of incidents, investigations, and enforcement actions.
- Testsifies in criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings as required.
- Issues citations, including parking violations when authorized.
- Affords emergency first aid when necessary.
- May assist with animal control duties as assigned.
- Operates and maintains law enforcement equipment and vehicles.
- Maintains records, logs, and documentation using computerized systems.
- Provides community engagement, including public presentations and school or civic group education programs.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Equipment Used / Work Environment
- Operates a variety of law enforcement equipment, including but not limited to firearms, radios, police vehicles, radar equipment, computers, fingerprinting tools, and emergency response equipment.
- Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous situations, and potentially dangerous or stressful circumstances.
Physical Demands
- The employee must be able to respond quickly in emergency situations and maintain physical readiness to perform law enforcement duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Knowledge of law enforcement procedures, investigation techniques, and evidence handling.
- Knowledge of court procedures and testimony requirements.
- Knowledge of first aid principles and emergency response practices.
- Knowledge of City geography and jurisdiction.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and respond appropriately under pressure.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to enforce laws fairly, tactfully, and consistently while respecting individual rights.
- Ability to operate firearms and law enforcement equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to prepare accurate and detailed reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a Tennessee POST certified peace officer in good standing.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
Prior Experience / Training
- Prior law enforcement experience.
- Additional law enforcement training or certifications preferred.
Work Schedule
- Fulltime position.
- Shift work required, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
