About the role

The City of Mount Vernon is seeking experienced police officers who are passionate about community service and ready to contribute to the safety and quality of life in our community.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol designated areas to deter and discover crime.
  • Aid persons in trouble and render public services as needed.
  • Enforce traffic and parking ordinances, operate radar units, and issue citations.
  • Investigate crime scenes, conduct interviews, gather evidence, and make arrests.
  • Respond to accidents, administer emergency first aid, and issue citations or make arrests.
  • Assist with stalled vehicles, pedestrians in need, and community disputes.
  • Perform guard duty, transfer prisoners, and testify in court.
  • Conduct thorough investigations, develop contacts, and assist with undercover operations.
  • Respond to bomb threats and other emergencies.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 90 quarter hours (60 semester) of college coursework, or equivalent experience.
  • U.S. Citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or DACA status.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
  • Successfully passed oral civil service examination, background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological examination, and medical examination.
  • Employed for at least 12 consecutive months as a full-time law enforcement officer within the last 24 months.
  • No more than six months break in service.
  • Graduated from a municipal or regional Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy or equivalent.
  • At least 12 months full-time paid law enforcement experience within the last 24 months.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, modern police methods, investigative techniques, and crime prevention.
  • Ability to maintain self-discipline, write clear reports, analyze situations, communicate effectively, and observe details.
  • Physical fitness to perform strenuous tasks and maintain shift work.
